Crushes Flowers - Supporting Daffodil Day

Daffodil Day 2025 : Hope Blooms in Yellow

Every year, the humble daffodil takes centre stage for one of Australia’s most meaningful causes: Daffodil Day. On Thursday 21st August 2025, people across the country will be wearing yellow, giving flowers, and donating to the Cancer Council to support life-saving cancer research and services.

At Crushes, flowers are what we know best. They brighten rooms, lift moods, and on this occasion, help to save lives. On Daffodil Day, flowers become a symbol of hope.

This year as part of Daffodil Day, we’ll be donating a portion of our daffodil sales to the Cancer Council.

What is Daffodil Day?

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Council’s biggest fundraising event, dedicated to raising money for:

  • Cancer research projects across Australia.
  • Prevention and education programs.
  • Support services for people and families affected by cancer.

Every year, thousands of Australians get involved. Some donate, some volunteer, some set up fundraising stalls, and many show support simply by wearing or gifting daffodils.

In 2025, the official date is Thursday 21st August - but support can happen all week long.

Why the daffodil?

The daffodil has always carried the message of renewal and resilience. It blooms at the end of winter, when the days still feel grey and cold, pushing through with its bright yellow face as a reminder that spring always comes.

For people impacted by cancer, the daffodil has become a beacon, a way of saying: we see you, we support you, and there is hope. It’s the flower chosen by the Cancer Council to represent Daffodil Day, which has been running in Australia since 1986.

Why Daffodil Day matters

Cancer is something that touches almost everyone. In fact, 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer by the age of 85. That’s not a statistic you can ignore.

But here’s the hopeful part: research is working. Survival rates are improving. Treatments are getting more targeted and less invasive. Lives are being saved.

Funds raised on Daffodil Day help the Cancer Council continue this progress — and support people through some of the hardest times of their lives.

So yes, it’s about a flower. But really, it’s about what that flower represents: a future with more survivors, more treatments, and more hope.

How to get involved in Daffodil Day 2025

There are so many ways to show support this year, from the simplest gesture to a full-scale fundraising effort. Here are a few ideas:

1. Buy daffodils

The most iconic way to participate is by buying a bunch of fresh daffodils. Whether it’s a street stall, a flower delivery service (hello 👋), or a local florist, every daffodil shared helps spread awareness.

2. Donate directly

Head to the Cancer Council website and make a donation. Even small contributions make a difference.

3. Fundraise at work or school

Workplaces and schools often get behind Daffodil Day by running morning teas, raffles, or wearing yellow. It’s a great way to raise funds while sparking conversations about why this day matters.

4. Wear yellow proudly

Not everyone can buy flowers, but everyone can wear yellow. A scarf, a pin, a ribbon — it all signals solidarity.

5. Share the message

Social media plays a huge role. Sharing a daffodil selfie or posting a donation link helps spread the cause beyond just your own circle.

Daffodils, symbolism, and Melbourne

As a Melbourne-based florist, we love the way daffodils capture the end of winter here. Late August is that cusp where we’re all craving a little more light and colour. The daffodil is usually one of the first spring bulbs to flower, and it’s hard not to feel cheered when you see one.

It’s also one of the most accessible flowers. It’s simple, unpretentious, and familiar to almost everyone. That makes it a perfect symbol for Daffodil Day: it belongs to all of us.

At Crushes, we’ll be featuring daffodils front and centre in the lead-up to the 28th. If you’d like to send a bunch to a friend or loved one in Melbourne, we can deliver straight to their door, a gesture that’s both beautiful and meaningful.

Why Crushes supports Daffodil Day

Daffodil Day brings together everything we love about flowers: their ability to look beautiful, connect people, and bring hope. By choosing to buy daffodils, donate, or even just wear a splash of yellow, you’re helping turn that inspiration into action.

This year, we’ll be donating a portion of our daffodil sales around August 21 to the Cancer Council. Because while flowers brighten the day, we want them to brighten the future, too.

How you can join in

If you’d like to take part in Daffodil Day 2025 with us, here’s how:

  • Send a bunch of daffodils to someone you love - book ahead or order same day. Perfect for sending a little hope.
  • Add daffodils to your regular bouquet order, knowing you’re contributing to something bigger.
  • Share your flowers on social media with the hashtag #DaffodilDay to spread awareness.

A final word

Daffodil Day isn’t just about fundraising. It’s about community. It’s about showing that none of us face cancer alone.

On Thursday 21st August 2025, join us in letting hope bloom bright and yellow. Whether it’s a flower on your desk, a donation online, or a bouquet sent to someone who needs a lift - every daffodil counts.
